July/August 2010 - HOT OFF THE PRESSES….Scribble Press

Created by two moms as a place for children to write, illustrate and publish their own books, Scribble Press (1st between 84th and 85th) will keep children of all ages occupied for HOURS. There are three types of books to choose from; Cueprints (a 6-page fill-in-the-blanks story to finish and illustrate), Author/Illustrator Kit (cover and 14 pages – assembled and bound when your child is finished) and Customized Books. Our favorite part is the child photo they take to include in the “author information” section on the back of each book!

The store is a virtual mecca of cool and interesting art supplies – all available for your little one to use when making their creation. They can even make additional copies, which makes a great holiday gift for the Grandparents!

Visit www.ScribblePress.com for more information or call 212-288-2928

“Tutankhamun, (better known as “King Tut”), and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs” touring exhibition has set up shop in Times Square, its first visit back to NYC in 30 years. What’s more there is a family day on June 13.

In addition to the awe-inspiring exhibition, (10 galleries with 130 atrifacts), there will be family-friendly programming that includes Egyptian themed face painting, a mummy wrapping activity and an exhibition tour in the afternoon. Children receive a King Tut goodie bag!

April 2010 - Lizards & Snakes: Alive! at American Museum of Natural History

If you have kids in New York, you probably can’t keep track of the number of times you have visited the American Museum of Natural History to take in the amazing dinosaurs, butterflies, dioramas and of course the Hall of Gems. And now through September 8th – there are 60 LIVE reasons to take another trip to the UWS – The Lizards & Snakes: Alive!

Not for the squeamish – this amazing exhibit is sure to please those tots that can’t get enough of all things slimy and with scales. Over 60 live lizards and snakes in re-created habitats are featured – from pythons to lizards, iguanas and boa constrictors. Just be weary – your little explorer might come home wanting a new pet.

Visit www.amnh.org for more information or call 212-769-5100

March 2010 - The New York City Fire Museum

Are your kids (and admit it YOU) enamored with NYC’s firemen? While the weather is still frightening, why not visit The New York City Fire Museum.

The museum houses one of the nation's most important collections of fire related art and artifacts from the late 18th century to the present. Among its holdings are painted leather buckets, helmets, parade hats and belts, lanterns and tools, pre Civil War hand pumped fire engines, and horse drawn vehicles.

What’s more – the city’s finest are there in full force – ready to answer any questions and teach your future fire fighter all the ins and outs of fighting fires.

The New York City Fire Museum is located in a renovated 1904 firehouse at 278 Spring Street in the SoHo district of Manhattan.

Visit www.nycfiremuseum.org for more information

February 2010 - "Uncle Pirate"

For all our theatre-loving mommies and kiddos – The Vital Theatre Company (of “Pinkalicious” fame) is performing “Uncle Pirate” through 2/28 on Saturdays and Sundays 11am and 1 pm. So grab your pirate hats and eye patches and join the fun!

This adorable (and NOT scary) show tells of a little boy who is having a hard time getting through fourth grade, until his uncle (who just happens to be a pirate) shows up! This musical adventure is fun for ages 3 and up and has many good moral lessons built into the storyline.

Tickets are $25. Visit www.vitaltheatre.org or call (212) 579-0528. VITAL THEATRE COMPANY is located at 2162 Broadway, 4th Floor, at 76th Street , on the Upper West Side.

December 2009 - Get into the Holiday Spirit!

Sleigh bells ring and the lights on the menorah are burning bright – here are just a few of our favorite ways to get into the holiday spirit, whatever holidays you celebrate:

1) Rockefeller Center Tree – Ok, call us cliché but there is nothing like the tree in Rock Center. If you can brace the crowds, what is not to love about the 30,00 some odd lights twinkling on this annual NYC tradition. Be adventurous and take your kids ice skating at the rink – it is one of those family days the kids will always remember!

2) New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show – So worth the trip – just watch your child light up with the many, and we mean many, scenes set up for the holiday season. Easy to get to on Metro North – this is a great day trip for children of all ages. (www.nybg.com)

3) Bryant Park Holiday Shops – This outdoor marketplace keeps getting better every year. Fun for the whole family with close to 100 outdoor booths, an outdoor heated bar and ice skating– genius! (www.holidayshopsatbryantpark.org)

4) A Christmas Carol at Literally Alive Theatre – We all know the story – Scrooge, Tiny Tim, etc. - but what a bonus to take your children to a family friendly version – complete with a craft project before the show! The production runs through the end of the month – and is a true treat for children of all ages. (www.literallyalive.com)

5) Ice Skating at Battery Park City – For the first year, downtowners have their very own ice rink on North End Avenue between Murray and Warren. For only $3 per skate rental, your kids can experience a little holiday magic – perhaps you can have dad watch/join in while you scurry over to Century 21 for a little last minute shopping? The rink is open every day until 10pm except Sundays when it closes at 9pm. (www.batteryparkcityice.com)

November 2009 - Richard Serra at Gagosian Gallery

Don't miss Richard Serra's two concentric steel sculptures at Gagosian Gallery (522 West 21st Street) in Chelsea .

These mammoth structures, Blind Spot (2002-2003) and Open Ended (2007-2008), are awe-inspiring not only for their sheer size, but for the feelings they invoke while moving through their circular twists and turns. Children will love getting lost in the mazes of these seemingly endless walls of steel.

If you kids are up for another art adventure, head up to West 25th Street to the Pace Wildenstein Gallery and view David Hockney: Paintings 2006-2009. Children will love these large scale colorful paintings.

Why not bring colored pencils and join your child in sketching these (or their own) masterpieces?

October 2009 - The High Line

Before the weather turns cold, take a stroll in NYCs newest park, the High Line.

Stretching from Gansevoort Street to West 20th, this elevated park hasbeautiful plantings and great open spaces for you and your kids to explore.

The Highline has varied day and evening programming from yoga and walking tours to astronomy. The dog-free park even has monthly family programs. October is the “Recycled Railroad” – a family art workshop with Children’s Museum of the Arts.

You can access the park at Gansevoort Street, 14th Street (Elevator under construction - not yet open), 16th Street (elevator access), 18th Street and 20th Street.

The High Line is a must see on your own and with your kids ... that is why it is Metropolitan Mom’s October pick!

September 2009 - The Bronx Zoo

Metropolitan Moms has been visiting the Bronx Zoo for some time – but there is a new reason to take a weekend adventure there – the Nature’s Air Show. Saturdays and Sundays until the 27th, the Zoo will host a number of fun, yet educational, onsite events and activities that aim to increase zoo-goers’ knowledge about birds. The activities include a Free Birds of Prey-flight show, special tours of the penguins as well as a bird-feeder program that kids can make and bring home their own birdfeeder. Now if we can only find somewhere to hang it that would actually attract birds…..

These exciting, yet educational programs at the Bronx Zoo, make it Metropolitan Moms cultural pick for September.

August 2009 - New York Botanical Garden

Before school starts, and you have some time, why not take a day trip to the New York Botanical Garden?

Through August the 250 acre NYBG is featuring a special edible garden exhibit introducing the kiddies to all those veggies we battle to get in their mouths. They have interactive classes especially designed for families during the weekends and weekdays! And don't forget to check out the adventure garden where children are actually encouraged to dig in the dirt!

All the fun and education in store at the NYBG’s Edible Garden make this exhibit Metropolitan Mom’s pick for August.
